Fr. James J. Young
Founder of NACSDC

Fr. James J. Young, CSP, started his special relationship with divorced Catholics in 1972 when Patricia McNally and two other women approached Father Jim for some help with their status as divorced Catholics. Together, they started a Divorced Catholics Group welcoming both men and women to the Church and extending compassion and support to each. Many believe today that the Boston group was the first group in the United States to minister to divorced Catholics of both genders. This pioneering effort quickly burgeoned into a course for divorced Catholics, which drew 40 students the first time around. From there, Father Jim proposed discussion and socializing groups that led into retreats and seminars for those undergoing a separation or divorce. As a result of publicity about the activities at the Paulist Center and Father Jim's efforts to establish a church ministry to reconcile separated and divorced Catholics, the North American Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics (NACSDC) was formed in 1974. Father Jim had been the Chaplain of NACSDC since its beginning while also serving as rector, community superior, and formation director of St Paul's College, the Paulist seminary at The Catholic University of America. He was about to leave for a new assignment as pastor of Old St. Mary's, a Paulist church in San Francisco, when he was hospitalized and later died, on September 12, 1986.
